چکیده

It has been understood for sometime that the classical smoothness spaces, such as the Sobolev and Besov classes, are not satisfactory for certain problems in image processing and nonlinear PDEs. Their deficiency lies in their isotropy. Functions in these smoothness spaces must be simultaneously smooth in all directions. The anisotropic generalizations of these spaces also have the deficiency that they are biased in coordinate directions. While they allow different smoothness in certain directions, these directions must be aligned to the coordinate axes. In the application areas mentioned above, it would be desirable to measure smoothness in new ways which would allow one to have more local control over the smoothness directions. We introduce one possible approach to this problem based on defining smoothness via level sets. We present this approach in the case of functions defined on Rd . Our smoothness spaces depend on two smoothness indices (s1,s2). The first reflects the smoothness of the level sets of the function, while the second index reflects how smoothly the level sets themselves are changing. As a motivation, we start with d = 2 and investigate Besov smooth domains. c © 2000 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

SPACES OF GENERALIZED SMOOTHNESS ON h–SETS AND RELATED DIRICHLET FORMS

The paper is devoted to the spaces of generalized smoothness on so-called h–sets. First we find the quarkonial representations of isotropic spaces of generalized smoothness on R and on an h–set. Then we investigate the representations of such spaces via differences, which are very helpful when we want to find an explicit representation of the domain of a Dirichlet form on h–sets. We prove that ...

Sharp Jackson and Bernstein inequalities for N -term approximation in sequence spaces with applications

We study N-term approximation for general families of sequence spaces, establishing sharp versions of Jackson and Bernstein inequalities. The sequence spaces used are adapted to provide characterizations of Triebel-Lizorkin and Besov spaces by means of wavelet-like systems using general dilation matrices, and thus they include spaces of anisotropic smoothness. As an application we characterize ...

Atomic and Subatomic Decompositions in Anisotropic Function Spaces

This work deals with decompositions in anisotropic function spaces. Defining anisotropic atoms as smooth building blocks which are the counterpart of the atoms from the works of M. Frazier and B. Jawerth, it is shown that the study of anisotropic function spaces can be done with the help of some sequence spaces in a similar way as it is done in the isotropic case. It is also shown that the suba...

Adaptive estimation on anisotropic Hölder spaces Part II. Partially adaptive case

In this paper, we consider a particular case of adaptation. Let us recall that, in the first paper “Fully case”, a large collecton of anisotropic Hölder spaces is fixed and the goal is to construct an adaptive estimator with respect to the absolutely unknown smoothness parameter. Here the problem is quite different: an additionnal information is known, the effective smoothness of the signal. We...

A Mean Characterization of Weighted Anisotropic Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin Spaces

In this article, the authors study weighted anisotropic Besov and TriebelLizorkin spaces associated with expansive dilations and A∞ weights. The authors show that elements of these spaces are locally integrable when the smoothness parameter α is positive. The authors also characterize these spaces for small values of α in terms of a mean square function recently introduced in the context of Sob...
